Minority councillors demand facilities

GUJRANWALA, Nov 28: All minority councillors on Wednesday decided that they would boycott the district council session to be held here on Thursday.

The decision was taken to protest against ignoring them in district council sub-committees and for not providing them better facilities.

The Christian participants alleged that the Muslim councillors were being granted development funds and Ramazan packages besides providing funds for decoration of their offices. However, they were being neglected, they added.

They demanded that they should be provided offices besides other facilities in each union council.

CONDEMNED: PML-N deposed MNA and former federal minister Ghulam Dastagir Khan and office-bearers of the District Bar Association on Wednesday condemned the statement of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto regarding Kashmir issue.

They said Benazir was supporting the Indian version on Kashmir issue, adding to the problems of people involved in liberation movement.

They demanded that she should be brought to book and the wealth plundered by her husband be taken back.

NO SALARIES: Octroi employees of local bodies institutions have not been given their salaries for the last three months.

These employees were absorbed in various union councils under the new district government system on Aug 14 this year.

They demanded that the authorities concerned should take stock of the situation and arrangements be made to disburse their salaries before Eid.

SHOT DEAD: A woman was shot dead while her spouse injured by eight people over an enmity in Wahando on Wednesday.

Muhammad Saleem and his wife Shamim were sitting in the compound of their house when the culprits opened fire on them. Shamim died instantly while Saleem was taken to the Civil Hospital in critical condition.

Police have registered a case against Maqsood Ahmad, Naveed, Khalid, Iqbal and others.

DEATH SENTENCE: Additional district and sessions judge Muhammad Tanvir Mir on Wednesday awarded death sentence and a fine of Rs190,000 to a convict for killing three people, including a woman.

He was also awarded 30-year imprisonment in another case.

According to the prosecution, the convict killed Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Husain and Zubaida and injured Farooq Ahmad and Nawab Ahmad over a family dispute in the Fatu Mand locality on May 16, 1998.
