KARACHI, Nov 24: Eleven shops were completely destroyed and 15 others partially damaged when a fire swept through a cloth market in Liaquatabad on early Saturday morning.

On Nov 20, about 120 shops had been destroyed and 50 others partially damaged in a big fire at Karim Centre in Saddar, one of the largest cloth markets in the country.

Fire brigade personnel said that they were informed about the fire which broke out in Khaliq Cloth Market adjacent to the Supermarket in Liaquatabad at about 2:24am.

They said the fire started at a shop which engulfed the neighbouring shops. Ten fire tenders had been pressed into service to put out the fire. Fire- fighters struggled for more than five hours to put out the fire. They also rescued a dozen of people who had been trapped in the market.

According to the shopkeepers’ assessment, they suffered a loss of Rs10 million because of the fire. However, it could not be ascertained whether the shops were insured or not, the fire brigade said.

The cause of the fire was stated to be a short-circuit in electricity wiring.

KILLED: An elderly couple were shot dead in their Korangi house on Saturday night.

The police said that they found Ghulam Husain, aged 60, and Mariam Bibi, aged 40, lying in a pool of blood in their house. The bodies were sent to a hospital for post-mortem.

The police said that Mariam Bibi had married Ghulam Husain about 15 days back. It was the second marriage of both Mariam Bibi and Ghulam Husain. Mariam had five daughters and three sons from her first husband. Her sons opposed her second marriage. The police suspected the sons of Mariam to be the killers of the couple. The police registered the case on the complaint of Ashiq Husain, son of Ghulam Husain from his first wife.

A man stabbed to death his young wife and a nephew on suspicion of extra- marital relation.

Mohammed Sarwar married Naz, aged 18, a few months ago. His nephew Nabiullah, aged 28, also lived with Sarwar, who suspected that his nephew had developed illicit relations with Naz. On late Friday night, Sarwar had an argument with Nabiullah that turned violent. Sarwar attacked his wife and nephew with a dagger. After killing both the man and his wife, the alleged killer, Nabiuallh, escaped.

The police sent the bodies to a hospital for post-mortem.

ARRESTED: The CIA arrested two men and recovered a hijacked motorcycle from their possession in Mochko on Saturday.

A CIA official said that the two suspects had hijacked a motorcycle (LFO-502) in Mochko.

The CIA spotted the motorcycle parked near Baba Wilayat Shah shrine. The police kept a watch on the motorcycle. When the two suspects appeared there and were about to speed away on the motorcycle, the CIA arrested them and seized the motorcycle.

The CIA also arrested three men, Jaffar, Naseeb Khan and Bilal, and recovered three pistols from them.

Besides, the police spokesman said, another 53 suspects were arrested on Saturday for their alleged involvement in various criminal activities.

The police also recovered five pistols, two revolvers, two daggers, one repeater gun, two carbine guns, stolen jewellery and property from the possession of some of them.
