TORONTO, Nov 12: Two Muslim students — a brother and a sister, whose parents are living in Jeddah — were stabbed to death in a high-rise complex in Mississauga, 25km west of Toronto. Police said the two died from stab wounds.

The names of the victims were withheld by police until investigations were completed.

While 23-year-old Nuzhat Amiji was found dead in her apartment, her brother Naeem, 21, ran up and down for help before collapsing.

With blood gushing out from all parts of his body, the university student pounded on neighbours’ doors for help. Afterwards, he rushed to the 21st floor for help before finally pulling fire alarms.

Responding to the ringing alarm, the fire-fighters discovered the dying man on a stairway in a pool of blood, police said.

Despite rescue workers’ efforts the man died shortly after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Their father, Shujauddin, arrived from Jeddah with his wife and eldest son Hasnain to bury the bodies.

Amiji, a businessman from Mumbai, has been living in Saudi Arabia for many years. The two dead children were studying in a Toronto university, said Manzoor Qureshi, a community leader here.

According to eyewitnesses, machinegun-toting policemen searched the complex to arrest the killers.

“Extensive investigations are being made,” said police constable Harry Tam.

Tam would not say whether there was a trail of blood on two floors between the two bodies. However, he did say that discovery of the man quickly led the police to the woman.

“We followed the scene,” Tam added. Police sources said a Mississauga man had been held for interrogation, but declined to give details.
