Goalies sparkle in tie match
RALEIGH (North Carolina), Nov 12: Edmonton Oilers goaltender Tommy Salo made a great save in the last minute of overtime to preserve a 1-1 tie Sunday as the Carolina Hurricanes extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
Earlier, his Carolina counterpart, Tom Barrasso, stopped a penalty shot by Anson Carter.
Jeff Daniels scored with 5:12 left in the first period for Carolina but the Oilers tied it 59 seconds into the second on Mike Comrie’s goal.
Carolina had the best chance to win it in overtime, but Salo turned aside Jeff O’Neill’s point-blank shot with 42 seconds left, and the puck was cleared from the crease.
O’Neill had received a great pass from Ron Francis on the right side.
Salo stopped 27 shots for the Oilers, who are 2-0-1-1 on a five-game road trip that concludes Thursday in Phoenix.
Barrasso made 27 saves for the first-place Hurricanes, who are 4-0-2 in their last six games.
In New York, Eric Lindros scored 56 seconds into overtime as the Rangers ran their winning streak to five games with a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
Lindros worked a give-and-go with Theo Fleury in the left corner, circling back and redirecting a feed past goaltender Jose Theodore as he charged the net.
It was the eighth goal of the season for Lindros, who is tied with linemate Mike York for the team lead in goals.
Lindros never would have had the chance to win it if not for a sensational save by Mike Richter, who stretched and slid to the right goalpost to glove an uncontested, point-blank one-timer from Jan Bulis with 3:42 left in regulation.
Bulis was left in disbelief, staring at the ice as he stood hunched over in front of the net.
Richter made 20 saves for the Rangers.
In Anaheim, Jere Lehtinen’s goal with five minutes remaining in regulation gave the Dallas Stars a 2-2 tie with the Mighty Ducks.
Lehtinen took the puck from defenseman Sergei Zubov in the right faceoff circle and fired a shot towards goaltender Steve Shields, whose stick was knocked away by Donald Audette as the Stars’ right wing came across the crease.
Shields argued but to no avail as the officials did not call for a review.
In Chicago, Tony Amonte scored 61 seconds into overtime as the Blackhawks kept their unbeaten home record intact with a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.
