Shab-e-Noor favourite

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Nov 3: Kamal Farooq’s highly bred bay filly Shab-e-Noor, should canter to victory when the Winter Race Meeting resumes at the Karachi Race Course Sunday afternoon.

Participating in the third race in the seven-race programme, amongst a big field of 18 runners, Shab-e-Noor although finishing second two lengths behind Lucky One in her last outing going over five furlongs, should find the going over the same distance to her liking and finish ahead of her 17 other rivals. Feasible unlucky to finish second last time out and Lady Killer should bag the second and third spots.

Of the seven events on the programme, the first five will be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs, while the next two will be held over six.

The first race begins at 1.00 p.m.

Steward Kamal Farooq is, in fact, hoping to end the afternoon’s programme with a good double.

In the concluding event, his chestnut filly Nudrat should pick up the spoils for the mere asking, with Jeetaingey Hum and Hoor-e-Arab on hand to finish second and third respectively.

In the opener, Law Of Nature is indeed in a class of his own in this company of 18 runners. Richy Rich improving with every run, could take the second spot from bottom weight Sahib Jan, unless Aziz Love goes all out to prove us wrong.

Tracking well in the early morning workouts, Hamza Saheb should gallop to victory in the second race, with the speedy Raysham and Lucky Love constant thorns in his side.

If all goes well Lucky One with perhaps stable jockey Tariq Mehmood holding the reins, could make it two winners in a row for owner Qazi Asif, with Welcome Shahtab and Golden News in close pursuit. But then again if in full form, Be Warn could upset the applecart in the fourth event.

The following event is reserved for highly bred two-year-old colts and fillies. Of the 11 runners in contention, the Flaming Arrow - Scarlet bay sibling Chantilly Lace from Faisal Farooq’s yard, after finishing a good second behind Black Ransom two weeks ago, is tipped in our columns to win this race from Prince Khurram and the impressive looking chestnut colt Strategic. Sweet Touch however, could provide the element of surprise.

The four-year-old chestnut colt Ray Of Light, the property of M. Zafar, keeps improving in every outing and could pass the winning post ahead of The Happy News and Bold Commander in the sixth event. But then again danger lurks in the shadows in the form of Slim Fit, a chicken in the weights.
