GUJRANWALA, Oct 22: At least 400 shopkeepers were fined on Monday by PTV raiding teams during their campaign to check commercial licences in various parts of the city.

The Pakistan Television Corporation has awarded a contract of checking licences to a private company, Inter Construct.

During the scrutiny of licences, checking staff in charge Mian Nazir Ahmad fined owners of commercial units, shops and beauty parlours in Satellite Town, Peoples Colony, Sialkoti Gate and other areas for not possessing TV licences.

He said that during the next phase, domestic TV licences would be checked in different localities.

JIHAD CONFERENCE: The Pak-Afghan Defence Council meeting will hold ‘jihad conference’ at Jamia Usmania, Garjakh, on Tuesday (today).

A rally will also be taken out to protest against the US military operation and killing of civilians in Afghanistan.

This decision was taken at a meeting held here on Monday with Jamaat-i-Islami district amir Prof Obaidur Rehman Madni in the chair.

Activists and leaders of various religious parties also attended the meeting.

SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead on Monday by his rival over a money dispute in the small industrial estate No 2.

Abid barged into the house of Muhammad Qadir and opened fire on him, killing him instantly.

Area police have registered a case.

TWO KILLED: A man and his brother-in-law were knocked down and killed on Monday by a speeding mini-bus near Wapda Town.

Qaiser Yaqoob and Akber Ali were on their way home by scooter (GAG-3763) when they were hit by the mini-bus (LXP-7890). They died on the spot.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.

Meanwhile, a matric student, Muhammad Imran of Kot Shahan village, was run over by a speeding truck (RIC-6367). He, too, died instantly. The truck crew escaped from the scene.

YOUTH STABBED: A youth was stabbed to death on suspicion by two assailants on Monday in Wahando.

Ayub was on his way home from the field when Azam and Zulfikar Ahmad forcibly took him to nearby fields and attacked him with knives. He died on the spot.

Police have instituted a case and are looking into it.

PROMOTED: The Gujranwala Range DIG has promoted over 100 head-constables as ASIs and transferred 11 inspectors to other districts.

According to a notification issued here on Monday, those promoted include 27 head-constables of Gujranwala district, 24 of Sialkot, 23 of Gujrat, six of Narowal, 14 of Mandi Bahauddin and five of Hafizabad districts.
