White powder found at State Department

WASHINGTON, Oct 12: An envelope containing a white powder was found in a mail room at the State Department, on Friday, spokesman Richard Boucher said.

Agents from the FBI were investigating, he said.

“At this time there is no cause for alarm,” a public address system announcement said.

Two days ago a suspicous white power was found in another envelope addressed to the department. Tests showed it did not contain anthrax.

BUSH: US President George W. Bush said the newly discovered anthrax case was a cause for “concern” but emphasized that the government was responding “quickly and forcefully.”

“We’re responding as quickly and forcefully as we can,” he said during a star-studded public appearance in the White House marking National Hispanic Heritage Month.—AFP
