Generals elevated

ISLAMABAD, Oct 7: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Sunday elevated Lt-Gen Muhammad Aziz Khan, commander fourth corps, and Lt-Gen Muhammad Yousuf, chief of General Staff (CGS), to the ranks of full general, an official announcement said.

Gen Aziz has been appointed chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (JCSC), and Gen Muhammad Yousaf has been appointed vice-chief of Army Staff (VCoS).

The post of vice-chief of Army Staff has been filled after almost a decade. The last VCoS was Mirza Aslam Baig who assumed the charge of chief of Army Staff after the death of Gen Zia-ul-Haq in a plane crash near Bhawalpur in August, 1998.

Before that the position VCoS had been held by Gen K.M. Arif and Gen Sawar Khan.

The post of chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee has also been filled after a laps of almost five years. The post of chairman JCSC is shared by all the three forces.

Air Marshal Farooq Feroze Khan and Admiral Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohy had held this post.

The posts which have fallen vacant by these promotions will be filled later, an official of Inter-Service Public Relations Brig. Saulat said.
