Shandur maul Lawari to lift Shandur Polo Festival crown

CHITRAL The Shandur team were crowned champions at the Shandur Polo Festival 2010 with a win over Lawari on Friday.

Playing at the highest polo ground in the world, Shandur dominated the final match from the word go. Shandur scored nine goals in the first half while Lawari, a team from Chitral, remained goalless.

The second half saw two goals from Lawari but that did not change of the state of the match as Shandur bagged three more goals to win 12-2.

The Shandur Polo Festival is an annual fixture, which attracts visitors from all over the country as well as foreign tourists.

This year's festival was marred by the boycott of the Gilgit polo team, who share a historic rivalry with Chitral.

Post-match paragliding demonstrations enthralled the spectators at the Shandur polo ground, 150 kiolmetre off Chitral. —APP
