Raza Haroon — a profile

KARACHI, July 22: Muttahida Qaumi Movement member of the Sindh Assembly Raza Haroon, who became leader of the opposition on Friday, was elected to the house from PS-115 in the 2008 general election.

Mr Haroon, former provincial minister of information technology, belongs to a middle-class family and has been living in PECHS, Block VI — that falls in his constituency — for a long time.

He joined the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in 1987 and, like many other members of his party, faced a great deal of hardship during the state-sponsored operation in the 1990s. He moved to London in 1994 and, in addition to doing private jobs, worked at the MQM international secretariat. He lived in London for 13 years and returned to Karachi in 2007.

Born in October 1965, he did his BCom from Karachi University and BSc in computers from a foreign private university in Karachi.

Married with two children, Mr Haroon, who is currently in politics full time, taught students as a private tutor during his student days and later joined a computer marketing firm. He became IT minister in 2009.
