KARACHI: KESC announces safety measures for monsoon

KARACHI, June 28: The people, in general, and KESC consumers, in particular, have been advised to strictly adhere to the advice repeatedly issued by the power company to protect themselves and their families from electrical accidents and electrocution resulting in death, specially during rains.

A KESC spokesman, on Friday, said that the public is again being suggested precautionary measures to save them from unfortunate happenings in the wake of the approaching monsoon rains.

The safety procedures outlined by KESC are:

1- Immediately inform the nearest KESC centre or 118 about a broken wire by phone. If the phone is busy, lodge a complaint at the centre-window for the purpose. The broken wire may be live and could cause a fatal accident if the complaint centre is not timely informed.

2- Don’t go near or touch a broken wire.

3- Don’t use a kunda connection during rain.

4- Keep away from electricity installations such as poles, PMTs and sub-stations. Local generator users should install them separate from the KESC line as some users hook their generators on the KESC neutral wire which becomes dangerous for the KESC staff working on the line in case of power failure.

6- Keep away from water accumulated during rains around electrical poles or other installations.

7- Local switches on the poles for street lights should not be touched during rains.

8- In case one phase is off, do not jump over to the other phase.

The KESC spokesman said that the past history suggests that higher rate of fatal accidents during rains have occurred in kunda-infested areas and among illegal connection users.

Hence, it is important that people, for their own safety, should remove all such connections before the rains start. AMTs have also busy removing kunda connections since last month.

He said that the KESC has undertaken tree pruning in areas where it was disturbing overhead power supply lines. The public is also requested that trees inside or outside their homes should be properly clipped so that tree branches do not touch the electricity wires.—PPI
