PESHAWAR, Sept 18: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has not taken a final decision regarding dissolution of the NWFP Assembly but it may use the option.

Talking to journalists here on Tuesday, the JI chief said that Gen Pervez Musharraf would not be accepted as president even if he doffed his uniform. He said the opposition parties accepted Musharraf neither as president nor as army chief.

“Gen Musharraf is once again trying to cheat the nation and he will remain in uniform after re-election,” he claimed, adding that the general had made a similar commitment with the MMA at the time of passage of the 17th Amendment.

Qazi Hussain said that the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) had the option to quit assemblies if Musharraf’s nomination papers were accepted by the Election Commission.

He said that MMA secretary-general Maulana Fazlur Rehman would support the move for resignations from both the houses of parliament. The APDM had yet to decide strategy regarding collective resignations, he added.

After the opposition’s resignations, the electoral college for the presidential election would collapse and Gen Musharraf’s election would become controversial, he said.

Holding Gen Musharraf responsible for the prevailing law and order situation, the JI chief said that the unconstitutional government had been ruling the country for more than seven years. The United States had imposed Gen Musharraf on the nation to protect its own interests.
