Mercury drops to freezing point

LAHORE, Jan 5: Friday was the coldest day of the current winter in Lahore with mercury dropping to freezing point. Local met office forecast cold and dry weather for the next 24 hours.

According to weather pundits, the whole province is in the grip of cold wave with mercury touching freezing temperatures in different cities.

Weather remained comparatively warm in the city during the months of November and December. However, during the current month it is experiencing continuous fall in temperature with 3.0 C recorded on Wednesday, 1.0 on Thursday and 0.0 C on Friday.

Chief meteorologist Shaukat Awan told APP that most areas of the province would continue to experience fog as low temperature and high humidity enhanced this phenomenon. However, he said, there would be no fog in areas where temperature had dropped below 0.0C as fall in temperature below freezing point lead to condensation of droplets.

About chances of rain, he said, since there was no rain yielding system over Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, there was little possibility of cloud burst during the next four days.—APP
