SAHIWAL: The Crime Control Department (CCD) arrested an injured suspected dacoit, while his accomplice managed to escape following an ‘encounter’ near village 79/5L on Tuesday night.
According to police, CCD Inspector Javed Iqbal was on a routine patrol when his team stopped a rickshaw carrying solar panels on suspicion that the panels had been stolen. As the police attempted to search the vehicle, the occupants allegedly opened fire.
The CCD team retaliated, triggering an exchange of gunfire that continued for nearly 15 minutes. After the encounter, police arrested an injured suspect, identified as Shamshad, a resident of Chak 408/GB in Okara district. However, his alleged accomplice, Bilal Qazi, escaped under the cover of darkness.
Police recovered two stolen motorcycles, the rickshaw, solar panels, two .30-bore pistols and several mobile phones from the suspects. The injured suspect was shifted to Sahiwal Teaching Hospital by Rescue 1122 for medical treatment.
A case has been registered under Sections 353, 324, 186 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, along with Section 13-A(2) of the Arms Ordinance, on the complaint of Inspector Javed Iqbal. Police said raids are being conducted to arrest the absconding suspect.
WASA SUPERVISOR: Officials of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Circle Office, Pakpattan, arrested a Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) supervisor for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs15,000 from a shopkeeper in exchange for reducing his water bill.
Reports said complainant Mazhar Iqbal, who runs an electronics shop near Bypass Road in Ghafar Block, Pakpattan, received a Wasa bill for July amounting to Rs5,279. He approached Wasa officials, claiming that his commercial shop had neither sewerage nor drinking water facilities and did not even have a washroom.
During the process, Wasa Supervisor Ali Raza allegedly offered to correct the bill and remove the shop from the department’s customer list in return for a bribe. He initially demanded Rs20,000, but the amount was negotiated to Rs15,000.
Mazhar Iqbal reported the matter to ACE Circle Officer Kashif Hashmi. Acting on the complaint, an ACE team, accompanied by an area magistrate, conducted a raid and arrested Ali Raza while he was allegedly receiving the bribe. The marked currency notes were recovered from his possession.
A case has been registered against the accused under Section 161 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act on the complaint of Maqbool Ahmed.
