KARACHI: The Karachi Bar Association (KBA) on Wednesday announced that it would stage a protest outside the office of the Sindh police chief because the authorities had failed to register an FIR against a former SHO over allegation of assaulting a lawyer at a police station.
Earlier, the KBA had called off its protest after claiming that the inspector general of police had agreed to visit the bar and meet the association’s cabinet on Wednesday to resolve the matter. However, speaking at a press conference, KBA President Aamir Warraich said the police chief did not uphold his commitment.
He announced that they would stage a protest outside the police chief office on Thursday (today).
Mr Warraich said the association had initially planned a sit-in outside the office of the Sindh inspector general of police. However, the protest was postponed after the intervention of the home minister, who assured the association that the police chief would visit the bar to hold talks and resolve the matter.
However, Mr Warraich added that the police chief did not honour his commitment. The bar president announced that the KBA would stage a sit-in outside the IG office on Thursday for an indefinite period.
The KBA alleged that former SHO Rao Muhammad Aslam had physically assaulted and harassed former KBA office-bearer Ishfaq Ahmed Buriro.
Although the police authorities took action against the officer by suspending him and reverting him to his previous rank, the KBA did not consider the action enough and continued to demand the registration of an FIR against the SHO.
KBA criticises Naqvi’s statement
In a separate statement, the KBA criticised the recent statement of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi over creation of new provinces to improve the country’s overall condition.
The KBA said: “Any proposal or political design which directly or indirectly seeks to divide Sindh is provocative, irresponsible and wholly unacceptable to the Karachi Bar Association and the people of Sindh.”
It added that Sindh is not an administrative territory available for political “experimentation”.
