Bitten by destiny
Peter Parker is an ordinary teenager. He goes to school, faces relationship problems and even struggles with money. He lives with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben after his parents die when he is just a child.
One day, while visiting a science exhibition, Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider. That is the day his life begins to change. Like any teenager, he doesn’t want to become a hero, but after losing someone he loves, he realises he must use his powers responsibly.
He then becomes the hero we all know as Spider-Man. Even after donning the suit, Peter continues to live an ordinary life with Aunt May. As he grows older, he makes new friends, falls in love and constantly struggles to balance his personal life with his responsibilities as Spider-Man.
The lesson that shaped a hero
Uncle Ben’s words, “With great power, there must also come — great responsibility,” become the guiding principle of Peter’s life. He realises that his powers are a gift and that he must use them to help others.
Despite his young age, he always tries to do the right thing and believes everyone deserves a chance. Even when being Spider-Man comes at a personal cost, Peter refuses to turn his back on people who need his help.
Your friendly neighbourhood hero
Unlike many superheroes, Spider-Man stays close to home, protecting ordinary people from dangers that larger heroes often overlook. Whether stopping a purse snatching or preventing a city-wide disaster, Spider-Man believes every person deserves to be saved.
He remains a neighbourhood hero because he also has to balance school, work and his personal life with being Spider-Man. He cannot ignore either of his responsibilities.
For this reason, Spider-Man is not usually a full-time member of the Avengers, although he often fights alongside them. He also values his secret identity and believes there should always be a hero looking out for the little guy while the Avengers deal with the world’s biggest threats.
Spider powers and hidden struggles
After being bitten by a radioactive spider, Spider-Man gains extraordinary spider-like abilities, including super strength, incredible agility, the ability to cling to walls and his famous Spider-Sense, which warns him of danger before it strikes.
Relying as much on his intelligence as his powers, Peter invents web-shooters that fire his own web fluid, strong enough to support enormous weights and swing him between buildings. Spider-Man’s greatest weakness is often his own sense of responsibility. He constantly puts others before himself, even when it means sacrificing his own happiness. At the same time, his immense strength means he must hold back his punches to avoid seriously injuring his opponent.
Rogues’ gallery
Spider-Man’s greatest enemy is the Green Goblin, the alter ego of Norman Osborn, a brilliant businessman and scientist, as well as the father of Peter’s best friend, Harry. Norman’s experiments to enhance human abilities go horribly wrong, transforming him into the Green Goblin and setting him on a collision course with Spider-Man.
Another of Spider-Man’s greatest foes is Doctor Octopus (Dr Otto Octavius), a brilliant scientist whose experiment goes disastrously wrong, leaving him with four powerful mechanical tentacles fused to his body. Once a respected scientist, he becomes one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous enemies, serving as a tragic reminder that even good people can be consumed by ambition.
More than the spectacular web-swinging, Spider-Man represents responsibility, resilience and the belief that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference. It is this relatability that has inspired generations to believe that anyone can wear the mask.
