BEIRUT: An Israeli strike in south Lebanon on Monday killed one person, the first deadly strike since the announcement of a deal to end the US-Israeli war against Iran on all fronts, including Lebanon.
“Enemy drone aircraft targeted a car at the Kfar Tibnit roundabout, leading to the death of its driver,” the National News Agency said, referring to a village near the city of Nabatieh.
Hezbollah said it had repelled an Israeli force that was trying to ‘advance’ in southern Lebanon, while Iran’s Press TV announced on X that one of its journalists had been wounded by an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon.
Fighting in southern Lebanon, however, has eased after the US-Iran deal to end the wider conflict was announced. Lebanese authorities warned displaced people not to rush home as Israel said it would keep troops in the south.
Lebanon has suffered the deadliest spillover of the US-Israeli war against Iran, with nearly 3,800 people killed and some 1.2 million people uprooted by an Israeli offensive against Hezbollah group, which is fighting Israel to liberate parts of south Lebanon Tel Aviv has occupied.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the latest strike which was carried out despite the US-brokered ceasefire in Lebanon and US-Iran peace deal annoucnement. A Hezbollah official said the group had not carried out any operations since the deal was announced, adding that its position on the ceasefire was linked to Israel adhering to it.
The official said Hezbollah rejects Israeli “freedom of movement” inside Lebanon and that Iran delayed signing the deal with the US to monitor Israel’s adherence to the ceasefire in Lebanon.
On the other hand, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel would not withdraw from security zones in southern Lebanon, Gaza and Syria, and that it would retaliate if Iran attacked Israel due to events in Lebanon.
The Israeli military has been razing villages in south Lebanon for weeks.
Israel not bound by deal
Gila Gamliel, a member of Israel’s political-security cabinet and science minister, said Israel was not bound by the US-Iran agreement and would continue attacking regional countries, Al Jazeera reported. “We are not a party to the agreement, and from our perspective, we will continue until we achieve the goal of disarming” the enemies, she told Israel’s Channel 7 on Monday evening.
