LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz underwent a “major surgery” at Sharif Medical City Hospital in Lahore, a member of her cabinet revealed on Thursday.

In a post on the social media platform X, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said: “Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz underwent major surgery at Sharif Medical City Hospital, after which she has been shifted home.”

She added that despite being in hospital, the chief minister monitored security, cleanliness and other administrative matters pertaining to the province on the first day of Eidul Azha.

It was learnt that during the three-hour-long surgery, surgeons operated on her throat glands, after which she was shifted to her room, and subsequently to the Sharif family’s Jati Umra residence.

About three years ago, CM Maryam had undergone a successful throat and parathyroid-related surgery in Geneva, Switzerland.

She had travelled abroad for the procedure because, according to her party, the PML-N, “specialists for her condition are primarily based in Switzerland and the United States”.

CM Maryam and her party had also explicitly dismissed social media speculation that she had been diagnosed with cancer, clarifying that the procedure was for a parathyroid condition.

During the last couple of years, she also underwent a separate minor surgical procedure locally.

The Punjab government and the PML-N remained tight-lipped over the CM’s “major surgery”.

Dawn approached both Marriyum Aurangzeb and Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari for details about CM Maryam’s surgery, but they not respond.

Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also prayed for her speedy recovery. Similarly, Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja also prayed for CM Maryam’s health and well-being in a post on X.
