KARACHI: Rash and negligent driving claimed the lives of five people during the Eidul Azha holidays, police and rescue services officials said on Friday.

Two young men were killed after a water tanker struck their motorcycle in Baldia Town.

Police said the victims were riding near a private bank in Baldia-3 when the tanker hit them. They sustained critical injuries and were taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, where doctors pronounced them dead.

The deceased were identified as 23-year-old Ibrahim and 20-year-old Saeed. Police arrested the tanker driver, identified as Safeer, and impounded the vehicle.

In another incident on Thursday, two pedestrians were killed and two others critically injured after a car, allegedly involved in a race with another vehicle, ran them over on the main National Highway.

A traffic police official said a hi-roof van (CN-5730) and a car (AWA-538), carrying a family, were racing when the van lost control and crashed into a tree on a footpath. The car veered into pedestrians, killing Abdul Qayum, 40, and Zaheer Khan, 30, on the spot and injuring two unidentified persons.

The bodies and injured were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Both drivers fled the scene, leaving behind their vehicles which were later impounded by the Shah Latif Town police.

In Korangi-5, a teenage boy was killed after a motorcycle overturned due to speeding.

Traffic police said three boys were riding on the motorcycle from Korangi-3 to Korangi-4 when the rider lost control because of excessive speed and the bike overturned.
