LAHORE: The Punjab School Education Department (SED) on Friday allowed public and private schools across the province to establish summer camps from June 1 to 30 subject to strict conditions aimed at protecting students from extreme weather.
According to a notification available with Dawn, summer camps will only operate from Monday to Thursday, while Friday will remain off. The camps will be conducted only between 7am and 10am.
The department said the summer camps would be open for students of all classes, but participation would not be mandatory. Schools have also been directed to obtain parents’ consent before enrolling students.
Private schools have been barred from charging any additional fee for the camps, while government schools and teachers have also been prohibited from collecting tuition fee from students.
The SED directed school administrations to ensure that all activities and classes are held indoors in view of the ongoing heatwave conditions. Schools have also been instructed to ensure availability of basic facilities, including cleanliness, cold drinking water, fans, sitting arrangements and electricity backup in case of loadshedding.
Institutions have additionally been asked to maintain first aid boxes with sufficient supplies.
The notification stated that the students attending summer camps would not be required to wear uniform and instead should use weather-friendly clothing.
The department warned that a legal action would be taken against the institutions violating the instructions.
Chief executive officers of District Education Authorities (DEAs) and heads of public and private schools have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the policy.
