Another suspected extortionist killed in ‘encounter’

KARACHI: Another suspected member of an extortion gang was killed in an alleged encounter in Surjani Town on Monday, just a day after one of his accomplices was gunned down in a similar shootout with police in Malir.

The police said that an encounter took place between the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and suspects within the jurisdiction of Surjani Town. After an exchange of gunfire, one extortionist, identified as Ehteshamuddin alias Asif Burger, was shot dead.

The police recovered a pistol with rounds and a motorcycle from the scene.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

In a statement, SIU SSP Amjad Shaikh claimed that the gang of extortionists led by Samad Kathiawari has been dismantled. He said the deceased suspect was the “shooter” for the gang. He had a prior criminal record with more than 13 FIRs registered against him at various police stations for crimes including extortion, robbery, possession of illegal weapons and street crimes.

He was an accomplice of another extortionist, Ghulam Qadir, who was shot dead by police in an encounter in Malir on Sunday.
