Aqeel faces Muzammil in Independence Day tennis decider

ISLAMABAD: Aqeel Khan and Muzammil Murtaza won their respective semi-finals of the Pakistan Independence Day National Ranking Tennis Tournament here at the PTF Tennis Complex on Wednesday.

Veteran player Aqeel beat Yousuf Khalil 7-6(5), 6-2 while Muzammil outclassed Barkatullah 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s singles semi-finals, Sheeza Sajid defeated Soha Ali 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 while Ushna Suhail got a walkover against Noor Malik who could not play due to an injury.

A total of 110 players across nine categories (men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, boys 18 & under, girls 18 & under, boys 14 & under, girls 14 & under, boys 12 & under and girls 12 & under) are participating in the event.

Results (semi-finals):

Men’s singles: Aqeel Khan bt Yousuf Khalil 7-6(5), 6-2; Muzammil Murtaza bt Barkatullah 6-2, 6-3

Men’s doubles: Aisam-ul-Haq/Aqeel Khan bt Shahzad Khan/Muzammil Murtaza 7-6(4), 7-5; Yousuf Khalil/Barkatullah bt Sami Zeb Khan/Ahmed Chudary 6-2, 6-7(3), 10-5

Women’s singles: Sheeza Sajid bt Soha Ali 5-7, 7-5, 6-2; Ushna Suhail bt Noor Malik -- walkover

Boys 18 & under singles: Abdul Basit bt Haziq Aasim 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-3; Hamza Roman bt Hassan Usmani 6-3, 6-4

Girls 18 & under singles: Zunaisha Noor bt Romaisa Malik 4-6, 6-2, 6-2

Boys 14 & under singles: Razik Sultan bt Mohammad Umair Ali 6-2, 6-1

Girls 14 & under singles: Aimen Rehan bt Shahnoor Umer 6-2, 6-1; Bismal Zia bt Eman Shahbaz 6-2, 6-0

Boys 12 & under: Mohammad Muaz bt Mohammad Faizan 6-2, 6-1; Mohammad Ayan bt Daniyal Abdullah 6-2, 6-2Girls 12 & under: Eman Shahbaz bt Amalia Aidrus 6-2, 6-1.
