From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1975: Fifty Years Ago: ‘Pakistan united, stable’

LONDON: “What perhaps is the source of greatest satisfaction to us is … that Pakistan is politically and financially the most stable country in Asia and more than many countries in Europe. At the same time it is one of the most unified countries in the world.” Declaring this in a BBC broadcast tonight (July 11) from London, Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan stressed that the main task “is to develop our country and improve the standard of living of the common man. … ” —

[Meanwhile, as reported by a correspondent in Karachi,] the need of co-operation between Pakistan and Bharat for the joint defence of this sub-continent was emphasised by Field Marshall Sir William Slim, Chief of the Imperial General Staff … in Karachi on Tuesday (July 11). He suggested that the two countries enter into a defensive [combine] like the West European powers. … Slim said … if Pakistan and Bharat made up their minds to settle their differences … they “can come to an agreement.” …
