Hamas has said the terms of a US-backed ceasefire approved by Israel did not meet the group’s demands, adding that the group is still discussing the proposal, Reuters reports.

A source briefed on the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the initial phase of the proposed deal would include a 60-day ceasefire and the flow of humanitarian aid into the enclave.

Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters that its terms echoed Israel’s position and do not contain commitments to end the conflict, withdraw Israeli troops or admit aid as Hamas has demanded.

Hamas is still studying the proposal, he added.

Separately, while speaking to AFP, Hamas political bureau member Bassem Naim said the new version meant “the continuation of killing and famine… and does not meet any of our people’s demands, foremost among them halting the war”.

A source close to the group said the new version “is considered a retreat” from the previous one, which “included an American commitment regarding permanent ceasefire negotiations,” AFP reports.
