GB on edge as schools near LoC shut

GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan government has closed educational institutions near the Line of Control (LoC) as Indian troops continue indiscriminate shelling across the boundary dividing GB and occupied Kashmir.

The region remained on high alert as tensions soared with India. Law enforcement, health and rescue authorities have been ordered to remain prepared for any eventuality.

A statement issued by GB Education Minister Ghulam Shahzad Agha said educational institutions have been closed in view of the current situation in sensitive border areas of the Baltistan division.

All educational institutions in Astore, Ghanche, and Kharmang districts will remain closed until further notice.

‘High alert’

GB Home Minister Shams Lone has said the region has been put on high alert to respond to Indian aggression.

He said the government is monitoring the situation around the clock. He said measures have been taken to protect the lives and property of locals in case of an emergency.

People of GB “are standing with the Pakistan Army” who have “responded effectively” to Indian aggression. Security at roads and bridges has been enhanced; medical emergencies imposed in government hospitals and leaves of all medical staff have been suspended, he said while outlining the special measures.

Earlier, GB Chief Secretary Abrar Ahmad Mirza chaired a meeting in Gilgit to bolster emergency preparedness. He said the government was equipped and strategically positioned to tackle any emergency and all resources would be utilised to confront any situation.

Meanwhile, anti-India rallies were held across GB on Friday. The protesters expressed solidarity with the Pakistan armed forces and condemned Indian aggression. Political parties, religious groups, student organisations and civil society members organised the protests in 10 districts of GB.
