ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority (IHRA) has stopped private labs from testing for Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, without getting approval from the National Institute of Health (NIH).

In a letter, all public and private healthcare establishments (HCEs), hospitals and laboratories of Islamabad have been directed not to conduct tests without prior approval so that the IHRA can maintain quality and standard of testing for Mpox so as to contain it from spreading.

“Any laboratory intending to perform Mpox testing in Islamabad Capital Territory must obtain clearance from Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority, which will seek approval from National Institute of Health (NIH) regarding the quality and standards of testing mpox in that laboratory. This measure ensures that only authorised and qualified laboratories conduct testing, maintaining the integrity of results. Presently, National Institute of Health is the only authorised laboratory to test mpox in Islamabad where the test is being done free of cost,” it stated.

“Any patient presenting with signs and symptoms of mpox at any hospital will be treated as a positive case until confirmation from lab testing is obtained. Immediate isolation and standard precautions will be implemented to prevent transmission. This proactive approach ensures timely containment and minimises the risk of spread,” it said.

“In view of the above, all healthcare establishments in ICT must comply with these directives immediately.

“Regular monitoring and inspections will be conducted to ensure adherence,” it added.

According to official of the health ministry, as many as two cases of the Mpox have been reported in the country since it was declared a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ by the World Health Organisation.
