KARACHI, March 26: The milk-sellers of Karachi have unilaterally raised the price of milk, selling the daily-use essential commodity at Rs30-34 per litre. The hapless housewives, who have yet to absorb the economic shock of wheat flour (Rs18 per kilogram) and sugar (Rs45 per kilogram), are finding it hard to balance their kitchen budget.

Ironically, the worst affected by this illegal and immoral price rise are infants and children, whose diet is incomplete without milk.

The citizens say that concerned officials at the provincial and city government levels knew well about the illegal rise in milk prices in Karachi, but they had kept a criminal mum over the issue.

They have requested the administration not to test their patience any further, which could force them to take to the streets.

Meanwhile, with the rise in milk prices, the prices of yogurt and other dairy products have also escalated. While the prices of milk being sold in tetra-packs are also on the rise.

The citizens have requested the government and consumer rights bodies to take notice of the hiked prices of milk in the city and ensure that the essential commodity was sold at officially fixed rates.—PPI
