An attacker has stabbed one man to death and seriously wounded another in an Israeli mall before being shot dead, officials said.

Police said they were treating the double stabbing in the northern town of Karmiel as “a suspected terror attack”.

“The attacker, whose identity is still unknown, was neutralised on site and his death was confirmed at the scene by medical officials,” Police Northern District commander Shuki Tahauka told reporters at the mall.

Paramedics said they rushed the two victims to hospital. One was later confirmed dead at the hospital, Masad Barhoum, director of the Galilee Medical Center, told Kan public television.

Security camera footage broadcast on Israeli television appeared to show the assailant grappling with a person outside a clothing store in the mall before he was shot.
