Colombia calls for curbs on coal sales to Israel: report

Colombia’s Ministry of Trade has called for restrictions on sales of coal to Israel, Bloomberg News reports, citing an internal document and an anonymous source with close knowledge of the issue, Al Jazeera reports.

The Colombian government has been among the world’s most vocal critics of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. In May, it announced plans to sever ties with Israel, with President Gustavo Petro calling Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “genocidal”.

Colombia’s president then ordered the opening of an embassy in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, the latest in a flurry of diplomatic moves from the country to upgrade ties with Palestine.
