Canadians born before May 14, 1948, can still list Palestine as their country of birth on their Canadian passport, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marc Miller has said, Al Jazeera reports.

The update from Miller comes after a TikTok user posted a video saying her Palestinian grandmother was told that “no country of birth” would be printed on her new Canadian passport.

“I’d like to correct recent claims circulating on social media,” said Miller before explaining how applicants born before May 14, 1948, could request Palestine as their place of birth.

May 14, 1948, is the date when Zionist forces, after securing the support of the British government for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, declared the establishment of the State of Israel, leading to the Nakba, or catastrophe, referring to the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.
