Commercial traffic along Suez Canal down a third from last year

The commercial marine traffic along the Suez Canal is down a third from last year, Al Jazeera reports.

The drop comes as Houthi attacks on commercial vessels spark fears among major shipping firms. Many of these firms are now directing their vessels all the way around southern Africa, a much longer and expensive route to Europe.

As a result, container traffic at the Cape of Good Hope, on the continent’s southern tip, has nearly doubled.
