From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1972: Fifty Years Ago: Moscow invitation

RAWALPINDI: The Soviet Government is believed to have invited Mr Nurul Amin, Vice President for a visit to Moscow. Earlier there was speculation in these circles about a possibility of President Bhutto’s visiting Moscow during the forthcoming tour of some Middle-East countries and Turkey which is beginning tomorrow [Jan 24]. President Bhutto has repeatedly expressed a keen desire to visit Moscow for talks with the Soviet leaders on problems facing this subcontinent. Meanwhile, it is learnt that a compromise formula is being evolved to save Pakistan from embarrassment and at the same time to satisfy Soviet and Indian demands that Pakistan should recognise Bangla Desh before talks for an overall peace settlement in the Sub-continent are initiated. — Staff correspondent
