RAWALPINDI: Heavy rain lashed the garrison city early Wednesday morning, turning the weather pleasant but at the same time inundating low-lying areas of the city.

However, an official of the Met Office said rainaccompanied by gusty winds was also expected on Thursday, adding that monsoon season would likely end bySept 15.

The Meteorological Department recorded 79mm of rain at Kutchery, 68mm at Chaklala and 49mm at Shamsabad in Rawalpindi. It said 81mmrain was recorded at the Airport, 19mm at Saidpur, 29mm at Bokra, 82mm at Zero Point and 21mm at Golra.

Rainwater created muddy puddles in different areas while low-lying areas were submerged.

People residing adjacent to Leh Nullah spent the day draining out water from their houses.

Rainwater also accumulated at Committee Chowk underpass but Wasa managed to drain it out. Due to this, traffic on main Murree Road remained suspended for an hour. Rainwater also gathered on the elevated road of the metro bus service.

Wasa Managing Director Raja Shaukat Mehmood told Dawn that water level at Leh Nullah did not touch the dangerous point but it affected low-lying areas.

He said Wasa would remain alert to tackle the issue of flooding, adding that the Met Office had predicted a small spell ofrain in the coming days however, there are no chances of floods in the nullah.
