THE Lansdowne Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in the world. It connects the twin cities of Rohri and Sukkur. Owing to official mismanagement, the bridge’s condition has deteriorated over the last many years.

The service life of the bridge has also expired, but no rehabilitation work has been initiated yet. There is no lighting arrangement in place over the bridge and that has caused a number of accidents that have failed to make the authorities realise the folly of their ways.

Since rehabilitation work is being done at the Sukkur Barrage, the traffic is diverted to the Lansdowne bridge, causing massive traffic jams. This is not only a source of trouble for the citizens, but also poses a serious danger to the old deteriorating structure of the bridge. Someone needs to take such factors into consideration.
