Donations pouring in for quake relief

ISLAMABAD, Oct 10: Various government departments and NGOs have accelerated their efforts to meet the emergency situation in the earthquake-hit areas and provide relief assistance to the affected people.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has donated one-day’s salary of its employees for the earthquake victims and constituted teams to assess the damage caused to Hazara, Malakand and AJK universities.

Relief goods containing tents, blankets, medicines and water were dispatched to Muzaffarabad on Monday.

The chairman HEC has written to all the vice-chancellors to ask their employees to donate one-day’s salary for the victims and set up relief cells in their institutions.

MINISTER: The government is using all resources for rehabilitation of the earthquake affected people.

This was stated by Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Faisal Saleh while presiding over an emergency meeting of the elected representatives of Kashmir Council here on Monday.

The meeting was attended by Chairman Public Accounts Committee Mohammad Matloob Inqilabi, Chairman Standing Committee, Ghulam Raza Shah Naqvi and Dr Najeeb Naqi.

The meeting decided that Mr Inqilabi and Mr Naqvi would visit Muzaffarabad while Dr Naqi and Sardar Sawar Khan would go to Rawlakot and Bagh to look after the distribution of relief goods sent by the Kashmir Council.

MEDICAL TEAM: Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) will send teams of doctors along with para-medical staff and medicines to help earthquake-stricken people in Mansehra, Balakot and Rawalakot.

This decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Secretary Health, Syed Anwar Mahmood here on Monday.

The medical teams carrying medacines and food will set up a base camp in Muzaffarabad and attend the patients in the affected areas.

NADRA: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) sent a convoy of 10 trucks loaded with food items like atta, sugar, pulses, medicines, bottled water as well as blankets, quilts and tents to the ruined cities of Muzaffarabad, Bagh and Rawlakot.

OGDCL: The Oil and Gas Development Company has donated Rs50 million to the president’s relief fund.

Besides, the employees of OGDCL have donated one-day’s salary amounting to Rs3.1 million.

The OGDCL said it had already sent five trucks of relief goods and was dispatching two teams of doctors to the areas.

SOS Village: The SOS Children’s Village has said it is sending food items for 1,000 quake-affected people in Muzaffarabad.

A statement said SOS Village had made arrangements for sheltering unaccompanied children and women in the federal capital.

CBR: The Central Board of Revenue has said it will provide Rs10 million from its Employees Welfare Fund besides donation of two days’ salary of all tax officials to the president relief fund.

A sum of Rs10 million will also be provided from the CBR Employees Welfare Fund for purchase of medical supplies, relief goods and donation to the fund.

ICCI: The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry has also set up a Rs1.1 million relief fund.

It appealed to the business community to donate articles of daily use like medicines, blankets warm clothes, atta, eatables and tents.

USC: The Utility Stores Corporation has dispatched 4,500 packages of different commodities to the affected areas.

PTA: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has announced that it will contribute Rs200 million to the president’s relief fund.

A statement said the PTA has dispatched two trucks of relief goods including blankets, mats, milk, dates and other food items to the affected areas.

PBC: The employees of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation have donated their one-day salary to the president’s fund.

The PBC said it has also sent a relief consignment for employees of Azad Kashmir Radio affected by the earthquake.

SGA: The Sindhi Graduates Association has set up a relief camp at Shah Abdul Latif Community Centre in Sector H-8/1.

In a statement, it said the quake-hit people can contact the association on telephone number 4442547 for shelter in the Shah Abdul Latif hall and hostel.

Chinese students: Chinese students of the National University of Modern Languages have donated Rs30,000 to the presidents’s fund.

The university authorities have also announced that their employees would donate one day’s salary to the fund.

SHARP: Society for Human Rights and Prisoners Aid has announced setting up of a relief camp in Sector F-10/2 to collect relief goods for the affected people.

Jafarya Fund: Quaid-i-Millat-i-Jaferya and senior central vice president of Pakistan Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Allama Sajid Ali Naqvi has set up Jaferya Relief Fund for the quake victims of Northern Areas, Azad Kashmir and NWFP.

ISLAMIC CALL: The bureau office of World Islamic Call Society of Libyan International Welfare Organization has converted its annual amount for Iftar into dry fruits package for the quake-hit areas.

In past, it said, the annual Iftar fund amounting to Rs5 million was distributed among the poor in the country.

ARL: The employees of Attock Refinery have donated their two-day salary to the president’s relief fund.
