Car snatchers kill policeman, injure three passersby

ISLAMABAD: A sub-inspector was killed while three passersby were injured during car snatching at gunpoint on Friday in Shams Colony police area.

Shams Colony SHO Inspector Asjad Altaf, when contacted, confirmed the killing of the SI apparently during a robbery at Police Lines Headquarters Mor.

The Police Lines also houses the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Waqaruddin Syed said the suspected robbers intercepted a car and forced its inmates out and drove away.

When a sub-inspector of the Islamabad Traffic Police tried to intercept them they opened fire on him.

As a result he and three other passersby suffered bullet injuries, the DIG said, adding that the injured were shifted to a local hospital where the SI was pronounced dead.

The car which was snatched was later found abandoned at Chungi No. 26, the SHO said, adding that the suspects escaped towards Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, a man murdered his brother-in-law over installation of a gate in the capital’s rural area, police said.

The incident took place in a village located in the area of Nilor, they said, adding the victim was identified as Munir Ahmed.

The suspect was a neighbour of his brother-in-law and both shared a wall, the police said, adding that the suspect had installed a gate which led to a dispute between them.

The police said the elders of the village intervened and tried to resolve the issue through a Jirga.

The jirga was in the process of hearing both the parties when the suspect along with three others barged into the shop of Ahmed and opened fire. The victim suffered three bullet injuries. He was shifted to a hospital where he died.
