Two workers fall to death

KARACHI: Two workers died after falling from a multistorey building in the Old City area on Wednesday, Nabi Bakhsh police said. They added that the workers slipped and fell from the building near Jubilee.

They were taken to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, where both of them were pronounced dead.

The deceased were identified as Ghulam Qadir, 34, and Zaheer, 35.

The bodies were handed over to their relatives after legal formalities.

Separately in the same area, Rubina, 50, and her son, Adeel, 24, sustained injuries when the balcony of their old building in the Ramaswami area collapsed. They were taken to hospital, where their condition was stated to be out of danger.

‘Robber’ shot dead in Sachal encounter

A suspected robber was shot dead in an ‘encounter’ late on Tuesday night in the Sachal area, officials said.

They added that two suspects riding a motorbike were fleeing after committing a robbery at a medical store when a police party involved in snap checking on Salimuzzaman Siddiqi Road, popularly known as Suparco Road, motioned them to stop. Instead, they accelerated its speed and resorted to firing, which was returned by the police, resulting in bullet injuries to one suspect. His accomplice escaped.

The wounded suspect, identified as Liaquat Khaskheli, was taken to the JPMC, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, said Malir SSP Sheeraz Nazeer.

The police claimed to have recovered Rs100,000 and a motorbike from his custody.

The SSP claimed that on the same night, the suspects had committed at least four robberies in the vicinity and one of the robbery victims later approached the police.—Staff Reporter
