Sectarian tension grips Digri

MIRPURKHAS: Heavy deployment of police and Rangers personnel in several localities of Digri prevented a sectarian clash as enraged activists of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) and the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) gathered at Mohammadi Chowk and had in heated arguments over removal of some banners on Friday.

The trouble started when a group of angry MWM activists assembled in the locality to protest removal of their banners and soon afterwards ASWJ activists also arrived there and started raising slogans.

Some activists from both sides traded allegations creating tension in the locality. As no side appeared ready to withdraw from the area, the situation in the entire Digri town grew tense.

Strong contingents of the local police and Rangers rushed to the scene and prevented the demonstrators from turning violent.

Apprehending an armed clash between the two parties, police and Rangers personnel were deployed at sensitive spots across the town, which remained in the grip of sectarian tension till late in the evening.
