Polls not possible on Jan 18: Memon

KARACHI: Sindh Information and Local Bodies Minister Sharjeel Memon has said that in the wake of the judgement of the Sindh High Court holding of local government elections on Jan 18 is not possible.

Speaking to journalists in his office on Monday afternoon, Mr Memon said: “We do not accept the delimitations of 2001 because these constituencies were worked out by the Musharraf government to appease his political friends as a political bribe.”He said that after the decision of the SHC they had the option to approach the Supreme Court, but any decision in that regard would be taken after legal consultation.

Responding to questions, the minister said that the nomination papers filed for the local government elections throughout the province were in accordance with the new delimitations which in the light of the judgement now stood null and void and the 2001 constituencies were not acceptable to them and they demanded that afresh delimitations were worked out in the province.

Mr Memon further said that after the high court judgement the nomination papers filed throughout the province had become ineffective and as such the election commission had to give new election schedule, including filing of new nomination papers.

“Therefore we demand that in the province fresh delimitations are worked out before holding of the LG elections,” he added.
