KARACHI, April 14 The City District Government Karachi has completed 40 per cent of the development work on the under-construction Banaras Chowk flyover, and CDGK officials say it will be completed within the next four months.

Work on this Rs1.15 billion one-and-a-half kilometre-long flyover began on the directives of city nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, in order to facilitate the people of Orangi and Baldia Towns.

The 24-foot wide flyover will stretch from Metro cinema to Pirabad police station, with 8.2 metres of space being earmarked in the centre of the flyover for a bus rapid transit system. A road will also be constructed under the flyover.

According to CDGK officials, the delay in completing the flyover was due to the incorporation of amendments in the plans suggested by local people.

The city nazim has directed the EDO (Works & Services), Rasheed Mughal, to speed up work on the flyover so that it may be completed on time.

He said that Banaras Chowk is an important and busy area, and the objective of the flyover is to put an end to traffic jams there.

He pointed out that hundreds of thousands of people live in Orangi and Baldia Towns, and this area is important because of the industries located there.

The city nazim also said that water pipelines have been laid separately for Orangi and Baldia Towns at a cost of Rs920 million, and that water has been released into the Orangi pipeline. He said that to carry water to Orangi Town's hills, two pumping stations have been constructed at a cost of Rs10 million.—APP
