Order of precedence

Published September 12, 2009

KAMRAN Shafi in his article, 'Of this and that' (Aug 25), has very ably given a comparison about the news item carrying bigwigs appearing in our print and electronic media vis-à-vis the Order of Precedence followed in India.

At the end he has shown his inability in finding out Pakistan's Order of Precedence.

Gen Yahya Khan, the last president and chief martial administrator of united Pakistan created by the Quaid-i-Azam, had promulgated the 'Warrant of Precedence'. In those days, it was said that during the regime of president Ayub Khan there was a tussle of superiority between the commissioner and GOC, Quetta.

It was decided then that commissioner of a division was senior to the GOC stationed there.

But Gen Yahya Khan reversed it in his historic decision and placed the commissioner even below a brigadier. Probably that was the last Warrant or Order of Precedence issued officially.
