Kidnappings for ransom in Sindh

Published January 9, 2010

THE law and order situation is getting serious in the interior of Sindh. There is hardly a day which passes by peacefully.

Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Qamber, Kashmore, Khairpur, Ghotki and Dadu districts now witness a serious law and order situation every now and then. Almost every other day we hear of somebody being kidnapped for ransom. Although all such cases are reported in the media, no serious efforts are being made to control the situation.

Wealthy communities of the districts, i.e. Hindus, Sheikhs, Memons, (majority of them are big businessmen), have become a prime target of the kidnappers. This situation has created a great sense of insecurity and restlessness among the above-mentioned communities.

It is a fact that without the help of local 'patharidars' (local influential persons who support kidnappers) such incidents cannot take place and, therefore, tightening a noose around them is very important for controlling the menace of kidnapping for ransom in Sindh's interior.

The police have to play a role in apprehending such elements. This can only be possible when the influential political leadership of the affected districts would extend a helping hand to the local administration.

Every effort must be made by authorities concerned to protect the lives and property of the above-mentioned and other affluent communities living in Sindh's interior so that they can continue their business activities without any fear of being abducted or killed by kidnappers.
