SUKKUR: PPP candidate for NA-199 Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah told an election meeting on Saturday that those claiming to end electricity loadshedding after coming to power were perhaps thinking of banking on plants set up by the PPP-led government which would start producing electricity in 2015.

Despite tremendous pressure and threats from foreign countries, he said, the former government had signed an agreement with Iran for a gas pipeline project which, after completion, would help in overcoming the country’s energy crisis.

He said his party had buried the Kalabagh dam project forever because it was against the interests of Sindh.

He said that some PPP leaders sacrificed their lives to save democracy while others faced fabricated cases instead of fleeing from the country.

He said the founder of the party, Z.A. Bhutto, made the masses, including those in remote areas, politically aware. As a result feudal lords and capitalists were defeated by candidates from poor and middle classes in the 1970 elections.

Due to the efforts of Mr Bhutto, he said, hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis were working in different countries. The PPP was popular because of its pro-people policies, Mr Shah said.

He addressed meetings in different towns and villages, including Pano Akil, Kandhra and Panhwari. PPP candidate for PS-3 (Sukkur) Jam Ikramullah Dharejo and local leaders also spoke at the rallies.
