BAGHDAD: Iraqi authorities say gunmen have killed three policemen in an attack on a security checkpoint in a northern city.
Police officials said that the Wednesday afternoon attack took place when gunmen in a speeding car fired on policemen manning a checkpoint in the former Al Qaeda stronghold city of Mosul, 360 kilometers northwest of Baghdad.
A hospital official confirmed the death toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.
Violence has ebbed in Iraq, but insurgents frequently target security forces in an attempt to undermine the Shia-led government.
