LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif said Saturday that no agreement had been reached between him and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to dissolve the national and provincial assemblies on the same date.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Shahbaz Sharif said that consensus to hold elections in all assemblies had however been built.
He said that the constitutional five-year term for the Punjab Assembly would end on April 8.
“Our party agrees to holding elections in the entire country on the same day,” he said.
“However, honest and qualified leaders should be brought in for the positions of the caretaker prime minister and provincial chief ministers.”
Speaking about the consultations on the caretaker prime minister, Shahbaz said: “If the PPP has better candidates than the ones proposed by us, then we will consider them.”
About the consultation process for selecting a caretaker chief minister in Sindh, Shahbaz claimed that the rightful opposition party in the Sindh Assembly was the Pakistan Muslim League - Functional (PML-F), and not the MQM.
