LAHORE, March 3: A team of Indian Punjab’s local government officials is due in the city on Monday (today) to explore possibilities of replicating the solid waste management system of Lahore on their side.

The four-member team would remain in the city until March 6 to study and examine the system, said a Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) spokesperson on Sunday.

During a recent visit to Lahore, Indian Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had expressed his desire to replicate the LWMC model in his province.

“An agreement between the two sides is likely to be signed during this visit as the Indian Punjab government has already expressed interest in replicating the Lahore model of solid waste management system in Amritsar,” the spokesperson said.

Comprising Indian Punjab Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Venu Parsad, Local Government Principal Secretary Jagpal Singh Sandhu, Municipal Corporation Ludhiana Commissioner Rakesh Kumar Verma and Municipal Corporation Bathinda PCS Commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta, the team would observe collection of solid waste at various locations across the city, especially on the Metro Bus track, visit LWMC and its contractors Ozpak and Albayrak’s offices, workshops, Mehmood Booti and Lakhodair dumpsites.

The delegation would also meet Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, LWMC Chairman Khawaja Ahmed Hassan and other members of the company’s Board of Directors (BoD). A dinner has also been arranged in the honour of the visiting team. — Staff Reporter
