KARACHI, Jan 18: Legal proceedings at the subordinate judiciary of the city mostly remained suspended on Friday when the city experienced a shutdown in the wake of the killing of a lawmaker.

Hundreds of cases were fixed for the day but most of them were simply adjourned since the jail authorities sent a small number of under-trial prisoners to the city courts and the district courts in Malir on Friday morning while a majority of lawyers, investigating officers and witnesses did not turn up due non-availability of public transport and sense of fear and insecurity among the masses.

Most stamp paper vendors, stationary shops and other business activities on the premises of the city courts also remained closed.

Similarly, legal work at the anti-terrorism courts, accountability courts and control of narcotic substances courts was completely suspended.

Solidarity day

While the Sindh Bar Council had announced a couple of days ago that all the district bar associations would hold general body meetings and stage rallies on Friday to express solidarity with the chief justice and the apex court, no such activities were witnessed on Friday.
