KARACHI: Responding to the contempt of court notice issued by the Supreme Court to him, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Friday said the party’s response in this regard would be in accordance with the law and the Constitution, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to party workers, Hussain said they would not lodge a protest against the apex court’s directives on the issue.

The MQM chief and the deputy convener of the party’s Rabita Committee Dr Farooq Sattar, who is also an MNA, have been summoned for Jan 7 for criticising the court’s directives regarding delimitation of constituencies of Karachi.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, during the hearing today, said he had read the text of a speech by Hussain and found it to be offensive and threatening. He said the language used in the speech was tantamount to an attempt to obstruct justice.

During his speech today, Hussain said he and his party would file a response in the apex court after consulting legal and constitutional experts.

Meanwhile, commenting on the murder investigation of Dr Imran Farooq by the Scotland Yard police, he said the party would extend all cooperation to help expedite the probe.

He said the probing agency had informed them before visiting the MQM office in Edgware.

Moreover, the MQM chief demanded the Supreme Court to take notice of the Ali Garh and Pakka Qila tragedies. “We are ready to hand over evidence to the court in this regard also,” he added.

Efforts were being made to remove the MQM from the country’s political scene for the past 35 years, he said.

“People have witnessed what happened to those who hurled allegations at Altaf Hussain and his party…and the world will witness it in the future also,” said the MQM chief.
