ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said here on Saturday that transparent elections were a requirement of the Constitution, DawnNews reported.

Speaking at the meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee, Chief Justice Iftikhar said that elections should take place according to the law and with complete honesty because the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was granted special powers by the Constitution.

He added that requests for assistance from any institutions should be considered.

Moreover, he added that the ECP had submitted a request for support in the upcoming elections. However, the Supreme Court sought an explanation from the ECP before arriving at a final decision in the matter.

Chief Justice Iftikhar also said that the judiciary had gained its freedom after much struggle and had been successful in restoring the public’s trust in them.

All five chief justices of all high courts attended the meeting.
