ISLAMABAD: Central leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Mian Raza Rabbani on Thursday said that efforts were made to create conflict between different institutions, but due to effective conciliatory policies of the government these did not work.

Rabbani also said the Balochistan issue has become very serious and requires crucial decisions.

The PPP senator was taking part on a motion in the Senate regarding law and order situation in the country with particular reference to target killings and sectarian violence in Balochistan, Karachi and Gilgit-Baltistan.

He said the issue of missing persons in Balochistan is becoming a main hurdle in the way of solving the issue.

Rabbani presented an eight points before the house to address the Karachi issue. He said these include creating consensus with the participation of all stakeholders against groups or individuals involved in terrorism.

He suggested establishing committees of stakeholders regarding law and order at the provincial assembly level, increasing coordination between inter and intra-provincial intelligence agencies, denying release of perpetrators of terrorism from police stations. He also proposed stopping of postings of SHOs on recommendations, provision of cell phone tracking facility to law enforcing agencies in Sindh, making the role of CPLC active and installation and repair of CCTV cameras at sensitive locations.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, taking part in the discussion, said there have been persistent attacks from the media and the opposition that the government is not taking enough steps, which was a wrong perception.

He requested for an in-camera briefing to inform the senators of the arrests and progress made so far in order to curb the terrorism.

Malik said Karachi is a multi-ethnic city and it is not the first time that the city is being faced with a wave of violence.
